Animal Kingdom

Starring Guy Pearce (The Proposition) and the OSCAR-nominated Jacki Weaver, ANIMAL KINGDOM is a stunning modern crime thriller of brooding and brutal intensity.

Masterfully directed and graced with outstanding performances, the film is being ranked alongside crime classics like A PROPHET, THE DEPARTED and LA CONFIDENTIAL.

Following the death of his mother, the young ‘J’ Cody goes to live with his estranged gangster relatives. With conflict escalating between his family of criminals and the police’s armed robbery division, J finds himself at the centre of a cold-blooded vengeance plot. As he naively navigates his way through the criminal underworld, he is forced to question where his loyalties lie as he tries to decipher who he can trust and who can protect him as he struggles for his own survival. Animal Kingdom won the much-coveted Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Dr. Mukti and Other Tales of Woe

Once again, Will Self has successfully managed to demonstrate his bizarre, gritty, and crude penchant for tantalizing comic genius. Dr. Mukti and Other Tales of Woe is an wonderfully terrifying journey into complete insanity and absurdity, not for the faint hearted! But if you are after an injection of extraordinary culture and disparaging irony this book wont disappoint.

Black Swan

Natalie Portman stars in this unusual, but captivating tale. The piece controversially addresses some of the underlying issues, young ballerinas are rumoured to face in the industry . Whilst the concept initially received criticism for being somewhat outdated. It harbours a range of surrealist qualities which allude to both symbolism and realism. For these reasons, (in addition to an astonishing range of the themes, effects, and ideas) it would be unreasonable to categorize BS as a one trick pony. Be prepared for an exceptional dichotomy between intensely dark suspense, and impeccably delicate fragility.

BLUE VALENTINE

Blue Valentine is an intense, tender and beautifully observed love story for anyone that’s ever been in love.

Driven by stand-out performances from Academy Award nominees Ryan Gosling (LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, HALF NELSON) and Michelle Williams (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, SYNECDOCHE NEW YORK, SHUTTER ISLAND), the film follows the path of a contemporary married couple with a young daughter as they contemplate the blissful early days of their relationship in contrast to their current marital challenges. Flooded with romantic memories of their courtship when they were both full of youthful hope about their lives together, Dean and Cindy use one night to try and save their marriage.

Brooklyn-based folk rock band Grizzly Bear provides a fitting soundtrack to this beautifully cool film - an honest, heartfelt and refreshingly real portrait of a relationship on the rocks.

Vincere

Socialist fascism is a rarely publicized concept. In this striking film by Marco Bellocchio, we are given an insight into Mussolini’s largely ‘secret’ romance with Ida Dalser. Benito is illustrated as a cold, ruthless, unforgiving, and cruel womanizer intent on acquiring influence. In contrast, Ida is depicted as a courageous, honest, altruistic, devoted and moderately obsessive feminist. This film flawlessly intertwines the political and sexual tensions in Mussolini’s life, to his apparent discomfort. Whilst the plot is based on alarmingly dark events, it’s nevertheless captivating and thought provoking.

Jack Bond

Jack Bond's a truly eccentric English legend. His surrealist films made big waves
back in the day. Following the death of his partner and film collaborator, he put
his celluloids into hiding for decades. It was only last year that he finally gave
permission for them to be unarchived, dusted down and enjoyed again.

We got Jamie from the Klaxons to catch up with him. Trailer's here.

We're launching the full-length on Monday. Let's get people talking about this over
the weekend.

Also, here are just a few reasons why this man should be your hero.

Jonah Lehrer

Author and editor Jonah Lehrer is a smart man. Not only has he worked with nobel prize winner Eric Kandel, he's also a massive fan of Virginia Woolf and Noam Chomsky. Lehrer is famed for two books, 'How We Decide' and our current favourite 'Proust Was A Neuroscientist'. These are largely based on evolutionary psychology, investigating the primordial nature and development of our actions.

'Proust was a Neuroscientist' sets out to dispel the myth, that the creative thinker is incapable of reaching scientific conclusions. Lehrer actually suggests that musician Igor Stravinsky, artist Paul Cezanne, and even chef Auguste Escoffier made pivotal breakthroughs, way ahead of their scientific counterparts. Well worth a read!

The Creators Project

A couple of months ago, VICE decided to launch a quality project featuring Spike Jonze, The Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Phoenix and Chris Cunningham. The aim was 'to mash up art and technology with some of the best creatives from across the globe'.

Since then, you may spotted interviews with Peaches, Mark Ronson and UNKLE's James Lavelle. Producers and procurers of talent Fools Gold were also on board. Not forgetting UVA a colourful collective of architects and designers who use LED, projectors and customized software (they worked with Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers and Vivienne Westwood)!

The Creators Project party in London, will be happening on July 17th. It's the biggest party Vice UK has ever thrown. There's the temptation free food and drink and installations from some of the best artists working today. In addition to live performances from Mark Ronson, Kele Okereke, Filthy Dukes, Trevor Jackson, Flats, Hudson Mohawke. Entrants will need to register to gain a chance of admission. An exhibition will be held during the day. This will completely free & open to everyone. WOW!

In summary, it's set to be a 15-hour extravaganza (of music, art, design and technology). Victoria House will opens at 12-noon to showcase a dizzying array of entertainment until 3am! Featuring performances, interactive exhibits, films and panel discussions from the likes of Mark Ronson, Spike Jonze, Kele Okereke, Trevor Jackson, Animal Collective, Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Martin Ware of Human League, United Visual Artists, Mira Calix, Matthew Herbert, Ladj Ly, onedotzero, Patrick Jean, and secret special guests.

They Still Rock: Egyptian Hip Hop

These youngsters from Manchester have seemingly been around for centuries, it's hard to believe 'they only started playing gigs in 2009' according to a BBC interview in February this year. Talented college boys Alex Pierce, Nick Delap and Lou Stevenson-Miller have a graciously relaxed attitude to their fame. Standout singles 'Wild Human Child' and 'Rad Pitt' are already making waves amongst the A-Level crowd, and we wish them every success in the UK.
